Via Verde is marking its 35th anniversary with a symbolic milestone: its inclusion in the Infopédia dictionary of the Portuguese language, in partnership with Porto Editora. The term “Via Verde” has thus become part of the Portuguese lexicon, reflecting the brand’s well-established presence in the daily lives and language of Portuguese speakers.

According to the dictionary, ‘Via Verde’ is defined as: An electronic system that simplifies and streamlines the automatic collection of charges for the use of infrastructure and/or services, such as tolls and parking, amongst others.

Over more than three decades, Via Verde has become more than just an automatic toll payment system; today, it is a term associated with speed, simplicity and efficiency – an evolution that is now gaining formal recognition.

Over more than three decades, Via Verde has become more than just an automatic toll payment system; today, it is synonymous with speed, simplicity and efficiency – an evolution that is now being formally recognised.

The announcement was made this afternoon during the event marking the brand’s 35th anniversary, which brought together company executives, marketing and branding experts, and guests from various sectors.

“Over the course of 35 years, Via Verde has forged a path based on innovation, convenience and efficiency. Its inclusion in the dictionary is more than just symbolic recognition; it is a milestone that reflects the service’s ability to evolve from a functional service into an integral part of everyday life, which is now also part of Portuguese popular culture and language. Inevitably, this recognition also reinforces our responsibility to continue anticipating needs and developing solutions that simplify users’ lives,” says Eduardo Ramos, CEO of Via Verde.

Via Verde has established itself as one of the most iconic technological innovations in road transport in Portugal, by improving traffic flow, simplifying payment processes and playing a pioneering role in the adoption of stop-free solutions in Europe. Over the years, it has evolved from a system focused on electronic toll collection into an integrated mobility solution, offering a wide range of services – now increasingly accessible via the app – which simplify the daily lives of its millions of customers.

Wholly owned by the Brisa Group, Via Verde is now present-day in all electronic toll collection systems in Portugal, covering a network of over 3,000 km, and offers a wide range of services, including simplified payment for parking in over 60 municipalities and electric vehicle charging, as well as access to and payment for complementary urban mobility services via the Via Verde ecosystem, establishing itself as an integrated solution through its digital app.

In 2025, Via Verde strengthened its commitment to sustainable mobility by becoming a Charging Point Operator through Via Verde Transição Energética, and continued its international expansion with projects in the Netherlands, and in France, through the acquisition of Axxès, a French company specialising in toll payment solutions for heavy goods vehicles, which enabled it to expand its presence to 15 European markets.
