Brisa staff raises drivers’ awareness of motorway safety
Brisa Autoestradas and ASECAP – the European Association of Toll Road Infrastructure Operators – held a road safety awareness event at the Colibri Pombal Sul/Norte service area on the A1 motorway, focusing on the safety of those who work on motorways.
Brisa Autoestradas and ASECAP – the European Association of Toll Road Infrastructure Operators – held a road safety awareness event today at the Colibri Pombal Sul/Norte service area on the A1 motorway. The initiative was part of the European #(S)he Works #ICare campaign, which highlights the importance of respecting and protecting the professionals who work on motorways every day.
Brisa is taking part in the campaign for the third consecutive year, reinforcing the importance of responsible driving behaviour near roadworks. These professionals, who often go unnoticed by drivers, work in high-risk conditions to maintain and repair the road network and provide roadside assistance to motorists during their journeys.
Throughout the day, visitors were able to see some of the equipment used by Brisa Autoestradas’ operational teams, including a roadside assistance van, trailers fitted with variable message signs, and truck-mounted attenuators (TMAs), among other equipment. In 2025, Brisa Autoestradas operated 19 TMAs, which improve the visibility and signage of teams at roadworks and help protect drivers in the event of a collision; four X-Cone systems, which reduce exposure to risk when placing and removing traffic cones; and a fleet of roadside assistance vans that covered more than 9.3 million kilometres patrolling the motorway network. Brisa teams were on site to explain how this equipment works, share their field experience and raise awareness of the risks associated with working on motorways.
The 2026 edition of the #(S)he Works #ICare campaign marks a new phase in the European initiative, with stronger collaboration between concessionaires and the introduction of a component focused on the health and well-being of professional drivers. This new dimension aims to highlight the links between physical well-being, fatigue and sedentary behaviour among professional drivers who spend long periods behind the wheel.
In 2025, the campaign involved 19 simultaneous awareness-raising activities organised by 18 concessionaires across eight European countries. In 2026, the initiative is expanding its reach further, consolidating its position as a coordinated European movement with a shared goal: making road safety a shared responsibility.
The campaign organisers emphasise that professionals working on motorways – including concessionaire employees, roadside assistance teams, service providers, law enforcement officers, firefighters, emergency response teams and vehicle recovery operators – face risky situations every day to keep roads operational and ensure everyone’s safety.
The campaign therefore calls on drivers to behave responsibly, always observing temporary traffic signs, speed limits and safe distances from the vehicle ahead when passing roadworks. Drivers are also urged to avoid distractions and take care around ongoing operations.
